How Your Tears Play a Role in Dry Eye

Tear production plays an important role in preventing dry eye. Dry eye can occur when something goes wrong with your tear production, or the glands that create tears become inflamed.
Your tears are made up of 3 layers

  • The oily outer layer
  • The watery middle layer
  • The inner mucus layer

Dry eye occurs when there is an imbalance or dysfunction in the different layers of tears that cover the surface of the eye.

Meibomian Gland Dysfunction & Dry Eye

Inflammation of the glands that line your eyelids can lead to meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). MGD can reduce oil production in your tears, causing the watery layer to evaporate and leading to dryness.

When MGD occurs, the oils that your meibomian glands produce can thicken and clog the glands, resulting in inflammation, eyelid irritation, and dry eye symptoms such as watery eyes, eye irritation, and a scratchy sensation.

Your Dry Eye Exam

Our dry eye exams are comprehensive and feature a variety of different diagnostic methods. When you visit us for your dry eye exam, you can expect a thorough examination of your eyes to get to the bottom of your symptoms and specific needs.

Our diagnostic methods include:

Our Personalized Treatment Options

We believe in helping our patients understand the treatment options they have available to them for dry eye. Beyond listing what treatment options we can provide, we take the time to sit with our patients and explain how each treatment method can benefit them.

Dry eye can be challenging to manage, and we want to help you find relief. Through a variety of personalized treatment options catered to your needs, we aim to help you achieve clear, comfortable vision.

Punctal Plugs

Punctal plugs are small devices placed into tear ducts to block the drainage of tears, help keep your eyes moist, and prevent them from drying out too quickly.

Punctal plugs are a treatment method that can help to provide lasting relief from dry eye symptoms. Our team will work with you to determine whether punctal plugs are the right treatment option for your unique needs.

Certain medicated eye drops contain an active ingredient that can help reduce inflammation and increase the eye’s natural ability to produce tears. Medicated drops can help to relieve discomfort related to dry eye.

If you’re experiencing dry eye symptoms, meibomian gland expression may be able to help.
This noninvasive procedure involves applying gentle pressure to the meibomian glands.

Expressing the oil in your eyelids can help the quality and quantity of your tears improve, reducing dry eye symptoms such as irritation, fatigue, and watery eyes.

BlephEx is an in-office procedure that treats inflammation of the eyelids to provide much-needed relief. This inflammation can be caused by meibomian gland dysfunction and clogged oil glands.

BlephEx helps clean the accumulated bacterial biofilm and plaque along the edge of your eyelids and eyelashes to help unclog oil glands. The procedure lasts around 6 to 8 minutes, and you may feel a slight tickling sensation during treatment.

Prescription eye inserts can help provide relief from dry eye symptoms. This special insert is placed in your eye to provide relief and alleviate the discomfort associated with dry eyes.

When artificial tear solutions are not effective, prescription eye inserts can help by thickening the tear film on the surface of your eye, providing much-needed moisture and lubrication.

Other dry eye treatment options are also available at our practice, including omega supplements, eyelid and nasal sprays, and more.

During your dry eye exam, our team will consider any and all options available to help you find relief from dry eyes.

Scleral Lenses for Dry Eye & Keratoconus

Beyond the effects dry eyes can have on your eyes and vision, they can also prevent you from wearing certain contact lenses.

Traditional contact lenses can exacerbate dry eye symptoms and cause discomfort. However, scleral lenses offer a unique solution. By resting on the sclera (the white part of the eye), these lenses create a reservoir of fluid that continuously bathes the cornea, providing a protective and moisturizing layer. This helps to alleviate dryness and minimize irritation.

We offer scleral contact lenses to our patients to help with dry eye management and for those who have keratoconus as well.
